Some grandiose expectations stem from our childhood experiences and they are reinforced daily by media hype and peer pressure. CBT practitioners point to three distorted beliefs in particular that can cause us to make god-like demands.
One leading practitioner, Professor Windy Dryden, defined three main irrational beliefs responsible for our emotional problems in these terms:
1. Because it would be highly preferable if I were outstandingly competent and/or loved by others, I absolutely should and must be. It is awful when I am not and I am therefore a worthless individual.
2. Because it is highly desirable that others treat me considerately and fairly, they absolutely must and should do so and they are rotten people who deserve to be utterly condemned when they do not.
3. Because it is preferable that I experience pleasure rather than pain, the world must absolutely arrange this, and life is horrible and I can’t bear it, when the world does not.
When a person reflects on how the world works, they will surely conclude that all governments and most corporations are really in the business of mind control. They are actually pursuing a policy of enlightened self-interest. What about you?
